Staying safe at home

Staying safe at home

Your home is your castle; it is the one place where you should always feel safe. It is therefore very disturbing to think that that sense of peace and security can be breached by break-ins at home. There are many things that home owners can do to protect their home, their family and themselves. Security alarm systems are a great tool to protect your home. Not only can they alert the proper authorities during a break in, but their visibility in the house is often a deterrent during a potential break in. If a break in does occur in your home there are several steps you can take in order to stay safe. It is of the outmost importance to stay calm and stay safe. Try to remember that most of the time the thieves are after your things and not after you. So stay out of their way and try to go a safe spot in your house. A safe spot in the house should be discussed prior to any break in. It is very valuable to have a family meeting to discuss these potential scenarios and possible solutions. Once you are safe, promptly alert the proper authorities by dialling 911, and explaining your situation as well as identifying your location. Often times a loud noise can be enough to scare a potential thief from your property as it attracts attention as to what they are doing-something, as simple as a car honking or dropping a plate onto the floor. When reporting a crime remember that the details matter, so try to memorize things that you may not think are important at the time, such as a physical description of a intruder, what transpired and if they escaped what direction they are heading. Small things can make a big difference.
